Electric Scooters And Insurance - Is A Separate Insurance Policy Required?
Posted by Car Insurance under Car InsuranceThe excerpt below is from a series of articles as regards electric scooters
Electric scooter indemnification is nearly beyond the bounds of po to discover in the United States because the electric motor scooter is so recent in the United States, and as such are not yet regulated in most places. Scooters fall into a legal grey area between bicycles and motorcycles, making it difficult if not impossible to purchase unambiguous electric scooter insurance. Some auto insurance companies are content to insure electric scooters as motorcycles and a few bicycle insurance companies handle electric scooters. Unlike in the UK, where electric scooter insurance is common and inexpensive, scooters in the US may be nearly impossible to insure at all.
As electric motor scooter law is new and has not been specifically addressed in most municipalities, it is always best to err on the part of caution. When you purchase your new scooter, call the regional DMV and inquire whether your scooter must be registered and/or insured. If insurance is required, the DMV may be able to point you in the direction of a local company. Assuming that insurance is not required by law, as is usually the case, separate electric scooter insurance is generally unnecessary.
Check your current homeowners or renters insurance policy. Often these policies cover loss or damage to your personal holdings anywhere in the world, subject to certain restrictions and exclusions. The Personal Liability portion of this coverage may protect you if you are liable for an accident that occurs while using your scooter. Be sure to talk to your insurance agent, as you may demand to augment your level of coverage in order to include your scooter.
